Seagate: Well, I've always found them cheap and have never had a problem with them. I had problems with some Maxtors before.

Another reason, well as I said in the other poll, IBM's suck.

I agree with Donk, I rarely have a problem with a Seagate drive....

I used to use Seagate some time back can't say I ever had a problem with one. Mostly I stick with Western Digital which never gave me a problem. Maxtor's on the other hand seemed to be a Hit or Miss in my experience.

In the old days, Seagates were awful. They've really turned around in the past six or eight years. Western Digitals aren't the fastest things around but they run quite well and last. Maxtors, I agree, are kind of hit or miss. Their SCSI drives tend to run really hot. IBM drives are fast but they had some really bad ones last year. I'd say for speed, IBM; for durability, WD or Seagate, whichever has a good rebate Very Happy

WD seems to currently have the lowest failure rates, but that can always change on a year to year baises.

I have had nothing but good luck with older Seagates, infact i still have a Seagate 250Meg from the mid 90's kicking around somewhere. Works perfectly. It was used as a swap partion on a Linux machine that had a full NNTP feed, for about 2 years[I used to own an ISP in the early Dial-Up days], then went into my personal machine and got heavy usage until about 1 year ago. Not a single problem with it to this day, I would still be using it if it wasn't so small/slow.

Well, my vote officially went to Western Digital due to the many great things I've heard about them. However, I also have an old Seagate (~512 MB) from 1994 that's still truckin'...

Oh, when I say old, I mean before 1990. Laughing Even that isn't too long ago. The first computer I learned to program was a TI 99/4A back around 1977. I didn't get my own computer at home until around 1981, a Radio Shack Color Computer with a whopping 16 KB of RAM and a ~1 MHz CPU! (Yes, that's kilobyes and megahertz.) An audio cassette tape drive was too expensive at the time so I "saved" my Basic programs by typing them on a manual typewriter. Loading a program meant typing the source code in--every time. Needless to say, once you got a program going, you didn't shutdown on a whim. Very Happy
